Every year the great rockhound migration takes place in Quartzsite, when there are eight major gem and mineral shows in January and February. Quartzsite's population swells to nearly a million people as rockhounds, jewelers and vendors come, mostly in RVs, to search out the good buys.

Topic: Dr. Roy Plotnick, Professor, Earth and Environmental Science, University of Illinois at Chicago, and long-time collector of Mazon Creek fossils, will talk about northeastern Illinois' famous lagerstätte. His research on the fossil Cnidarian Essexella will turn how you look at Mazon Creek "blobs" upside down.

The Science of Jurassic Park

CRMS member, local biologist and avocational paleontologist Donald Baumgartner presents a scientific critique of the five-movie Jurassic Park series on its 25th anniversary. What was true? What was wrong? What action scenes did not make sense? Donald will reveal the science and movie magic. To best appreciate this presentation, watch again all movies before coming to enjoy this talk. Following the program real dinosaur fossils, legally collected, will be displayed and available for sale. Donald will also identify fossils for attendees.

Burpee Museum's Annual PaleoFest
